Eco-Green
Green printing uses recycled paper products that contain recovered fibers, which include pre or post consumer sources, or both. As a result, there are significant environmental advantages of producing recycled paper over non-recycled paper. The advantages create an eco-friendly footprint which consists of a reduced impact on forest resources, reduced air and water pollution, reduced water and energy consumption, and the reduction of solid waste. The use of eco-friendly inks and solvents based on soy, emit very low traces of volatile organic compounds (VOCs). VOCs are the fumes emitted into the air from inks, solvents and cleaners as they are used or while they dry. In comparison, petroleum based inks release a much greater amount of VOCs than soy inks. Soy inks are also extremely beneficial during the paper recycling process since removing soy ink stains from paper is much easier than other artificial inks. Soy inks are easily washable and cause less damage to the paper fibers. As a result, the recycled paper is much brighter and fit for reuse. Furthermore, the waste produced by soy inks does not pose any threat to the environment and can be easily treated using modern methods
Paper Weights Explained
For many people, paper weights can be confusing. One of the most confusing aspects of paper weights is called the basis, substance (Sub.) or pound (#) specification. In dealing with papers, these terms mean basically the same thing. Most likely you have heard the term "20lb Copy Paper". The 20lb copy paper is the most used paper for copiers, fax machines and where printing needs a minimal quality paper for printing. It is also low in cost and performs well when printing on one side only. Many papers are called "comparative weight papers". For example, you may see a sheet described as 24/60. Why does it say 24/60? Because a 24# Bond sheet is the same weight and thickness as a 60# Text/Offset. How can this be? It is because weights specified are based on the parent size sheet they were cut from.
For example, the 24# bond is based on a sheet 17 x 22 inches and the offset is based on a 25 x 38 size sheet. Take 500 sheets of the 17 x 22 bond sheet and it will weigh 24 lbs while 500 sheets of 25 x 38 offset/text will weigh 60 lbs. The extra weight comes from the difference in the size of the sheets. The basic size for cover papers is 20 x 26. The most common comparable weights are primarily lighter weight papers and don't include cover weights. They are 20/50, 24/60, 28/70, 32/80. If this is still too confusing or you are interested in how the types and weights compare rather than the underlying reason then the following table should help. Comparative Basic Weights
What are the different types of folds available? Below are the default options for folding. Keep in mind that folds not available pre-fabricated from our ordering system can still be done for an additional fee as a custom order. Map-fold, double-gate-fold, and accordion folds are examples of this. Make sure any folding questions about your job are clear BEFORE approving your proofs.
Half Fold A sheet is folded in half. No panel compensation is necessary; each panel is equivalent in size. The front and the back have an identical layout, and (1) template may be used for both.
Tri-Fold A sheet is folded into three sections. A fold where a three panel piece has both side sections folded inward, one on top of the other each section is approximately 1/3 the length of the piece. Also known as a C-fold or letter-fold. Because one panel "tucks in" panel compensation is necessary. Make sure you use both the front and back templates; THEY ARE NOT THE SAME.
Z-Fold (3-panel) A paper fold represented by back and forth folds into three panels. No panel compensation is necessary; each panel is equivalent in size. The front and the back have an identical layout, and (1) template may be used for both.
4-Panel Roll Fold A type of fold where the piece is folded inward at one end and then folded inward again one or more times. It is as if you are rolling the piece up.
4-Panel Accordion Fold A sheet which has been printed on only one side then folded twice in right angles to form a W-shaped four page uncut section. We are able to fold up to 4 panel (8 page max). 5 panel (10 page)+ will be send out to get folded. Accordion folds are usually 100lb book papers. Such as, brochures and catalogue.
Gate Fold A three panel fold where the two outside panels fold inward to meet in the center. A four panel version of this fold, that folds in half again is called a Double Gate Fold.
Parallel Fold A type of fold where the piece is folded in half and then folded in half again. The folds are parallel to each other. Also known as a quarter fold. Two parallel folds to a sheet will produce 6 panels; this is called a "Double Parallel Fold".
